In the USA, Peru recovers stolen Paracas textile

A joint work conducted by the Peruvian Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs and the US Government brought as a consequence the return of an important object belonging to Peru’s Cultural Heritage: A Paracas Necrópolis funerary-styled textile.

This textile was found by the end of 2012 in the state of Texas.

Subsequently, it was seized and identified by American authorities after carrying out an in situ examination.

This process enabled to identify it as a “Paracas Necropolis style funerary textile”, which was robbed from Peru’s National Museum of Anthropology, Archaeology and History in 1993.

It may be noted, this textile originally was found due to archaeological excavations executed in Paracas, which were led by the archaeologist Julio C. Tello in 1929.

The textile returning-process was initiated after the recovery, following its exhibition at the “Peruvian Gold: Ancient Treasures Unearthed” event held in Dallas.

It was carried out in accordance with Peru’s Culture Ministry and the National Geographic Society.

The recovery of this textile is part of the large group of 70 different objects recovered in 2014 in the United States, in accordance with the “Memorandum of Understanding Concerning the Imposition of Import Restrictions on Archaeological Material from the Pre-Hispanic Cultures and Certain Ethnological Material from the Colonial Period”, which was signed in 1997.
