Peru will become the stage for the first meeting of the Latin American Technical Cooperation Network on National Parks, other Protected Areas & Wildlife (Redparques) set to be held on August 12-14.
The event will gather directors and specialists of organizations working on the management of protected areas in countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Uruguay, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Guyana, Paraguay, Honduras, French Guyana, Chile, Bolivia, Panama and Venezuela.
On the first day, Peruvian and Colombian officials will sign a binational agreement aimed at consolidating joint actions currently carried out by both nations, which are required for the proper protection of areas, as well as for the sustainable development of communities comprised within the joint geographic sphere.
It must be noted the covenant is to be inked by Peruvian State-run National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) and the System of National Natural Parks of Colombia.
Likewise, Redparques’ declaration proposal for the next COP 21 will be debated. The document emphasizes the fundamental role played by the said areas with regard to climate change and the natural solutions offered as part of a mitigation and adaptation strategy.
The meeting will conclude by paying a visit to the Lachay National Reserve; natural protected area located in the Lima region, where attendees will learn about the coastal hills’ unique ecosystem.
