Lima will host the “4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves” to gather over 1,300 experts and representatives of organizations involved in natural areas protection on March 14-17, 2016.
The head of the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp), Pedro Gamboa, considered this meeting an historic event not only for Peru, but for Latin America, since it is “the first time the meeting will be hosted in the region.”
One of the main objectives will be working on the design of a the plan of action called “Lima Action Plan for Biosphere Reserves for 2016-2025”.
“We are working jointly with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Agriculture Ministry and Environment Ministry, as well as with regional and local governments,” he pointed out with regard to organizing the best event.
Gamboa said visits to the natural protected areas, such as biosphere reserves, have been programmed. Destinations could be Oxapampa or Tumbes, it was informed.
The action plan to be launched will set an example in terms of biosphere reserves control. It is also expected to review the implementation of Madrid Action Plan for Biosphere Reserves 2008-2013.
“This is not just a camaraderie meeting, but also a working meeting to define the direction the reserves must follow in the ten next years,” Gamboa stated.
This is a recognition for Peru, for carrying out measures to protect its natural reserves and environment through the Environment Minister and Sernanp, he added.
