Peru said on Friday it has recovered 22 pieces of cultural heritage dating back to the pre-Inca era that were looted from the country before heading off to Spain, where they were illegally smuggled.
The seizure of this priceless, archaeological treasure comes after two years of investigations undertaken by the police, in close collaboration with the Peruvian embassy in Spain.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the pieces recovered include several pots and pottery figures, as well as textile fragments, instruments and ornaments from the Nazca, Paracas and Chavin cultures.
This important set of cultural items was returned on December 19 at the Museum of America in Madrid.
The museum will house the relics until the procedures for their transfer are completed.
The event took place in the presence of Spanish police officials and diplomats from both countries.
Authorities from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Museum of America were also present.
