Peru’s Central Reserve Bank (BCR) has issued on Thursday the seventeenth one sol coin of the numismatic series “Wealth and Pride of Peru”, this time depicting the Huaca de la Luna site (Temple of the Moon).
The major archaeological site was built at the time of the Moche culture (100 BC-650 AD) and it is located 4 kilometers (2.4 miles) from the coastal city of Trujillo, in the Peruvian northern La Libertad region.
The huge adobe brick building along with the Pyramid of the Sun are considered to be the former capital of the Moche State and the major component of the urban and ceremonial center of this prehispanic settlement.
The coin, struck by the National Mint House, has a weight of 7,32 grams and a diameter of 25.5 mm, it has Peru’s Coat of Arms and the year of issue within an eight-sided polygon.
The reverse of the one sol coin bears an image which represents the “White Mountain Deity” and beneath of it the site’s ancient walls covered with relief paintings are on display.
Likewise, there is the phrase “Huaca de la Luna S. I – IX d. C” at the upper part of this emblematic coin’s reverse. The country’s central bank announced that twelve million coins have been minted and put into circulation.
